The Expected Release of GTA 6
It seems increasingly likely that GTA 6 will launch on 19 November, assuming no unexpected obstacles arise. This prediction comes from the fact that six months before the anticipated release, Rockstar Games’ parent company, Take-Two Interactive, confirmed that the game is still on schedule for a 2026 release. Industry experts are also expressing a high level of confidence in this timeline.
One reason for this confidence is that most other publishers are avoiding releasing their games around the same time as GTA 6. The majority of games scheduled for the second half of 2026 are either set for release in September or October or have been postponed entirely to February 2027 and beyond.
While the confirmation of GTA 6’s release date is positive news, gaming expert George E. Osborn, author of the upcoming book Power Play, believes that this massive release might be the last of its kind. Osborn, who has written about the intersection of gaming and politics, shared his insights ahead of the book’s release.
A Landmark Moment for the Gaming Industry
Osborn stated, “I think what you can see really clearly is everyone understands GTA 6 will be a landmark moment for the global games industry. It’s almost certainly going to be the last enormous scale release of its kind.”
He explained that very few other games will be able to match the budget, scale, and development time of GTA 6 because the economics of the industry no longer support such large-scale projects. “The costs are too high, and consumers are facing financial challenges,” he added.
The Changing Landscape of Game Development
Osborn pointed out that over the past two years, the trend has been clear: games are taking too long to reach the market and are becoming too expensive for players to afford. He noted that cost of living issues have affected consumer spending, and the prices of consoles have also increased due to factors like RAM shortages.
“Companies are starting to think that four or five years is too long to wait for a game release,” Osborn said. “If that’s the case, then something like GTA 6, which has likely been in development for about a decade at an enormous cost, is very difficult to replicate in today’s market.”
However, he added that Rockstar could potentially do it again, but only because the studio has created a unique market for itself. “With pretty much every other developer, the story over the past two years has been clear. Games have taken too long to get to the market. They’re costing too much for people to buy lots and lots of games.”
The Impact of GTA 6 on the Industry
Osborn also believes it will be interesting to see how the release of GTA 6 affects the rest of the gaming industry. He mentioned that Sony reported a slight dip in revenue in its financials, but the company may be looking ahead and anticipating that GTA 6 could help boost sales.
“Sony was expecting a dip and then if GTA 6 comes along, it should sell so many consoles and games that it essentially pushes itself back towards profitability,” Osborn explained.
About Power Play
Osborn’s book Power Play is set to be released on Thursday, 18 June, in hardback. The book explores the connection between gaming and politics, as well as the battle for global influence.
