New Cast Member Joins ‘The Last of Us’ Season 3
‘The Last of Us’ has announced a new addition to its cast for Season 3. On June 11, Deadline reported that Peter Sarsgaard will take on a key role in the upcoming season, which is set to premiere on HBO in 2027. This news comes as the show continues to build its ensemble cast, with Kyriana Kratter and Michelle Mao recently joining as Seraphite members Lev and Yara, respectively.
Season 3 will shift the focus to Kaitlyn Dever’s character, Abby, who made a brief appearance in Season 2 but played a crucial role in one of the season’s most significant plot twists. Craig Mazin will be the sole showrunner for this season, following Neil Druckmann’s departure from the project.
Introducing Amon: A New Character in the Story
Peter Sarsgaard will portray Amon, a recurring character and one of the leaders of the extremist group known as the Seraphites. Unlike other characters in the series, Amon is an original creation for the show and does not appear in the video game upon which the HBO drama is based. The third season will adapt the second half of the video game ‘The Last of Us Part II,’ continuing the narrative from where Season 2 left off.
In the upcoming season, the story will center around the revenge arc between Abby and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), as Abby was responsible for the death of Ellie’s father figure, Joel (Pedro Pascal). As a soldier in the Washington Liberation Front (WLF), Abby is likely to cross paths with the Seraphites, leading to a conflict over control of Seattle. The Seraphites, a religious cult, were briefly introduced in Season 2, but their lore will be explored more deeply in Season 3.
Peter Sarsgaard’s Career Highlights
Peter Sarsgaard, a 55-year-old actor, made his film debut in 1995’s ‘Dead Man Walking.’ He has since appeared in several Oscar-nominated films, including ‘The Batman,’ ‘An Education,’ ‘Blue Jasmine,’ and ‘The Lost Daughter.’ His television credits include roles in Netflix’s ‘The Killing,’ Hulu’s ‘Dopesick,’ and Apple TV+’s ‘Presumed Innocent,’ where he shared the screen with his real-life brother-in-law, Jake Gyllenhaal.
Sarsgaard has received Primetime Emmy Award nominations for his performances in ‘Dopesick’ and ‘Presumed Innocent.’ He recently appeared in a guest-starring role in HBO’s dark comedy, ‘DTF St. Louis.’ Additionally, he previously worked with Kaitlyn Dever in the 2021 miniseries ‘Dopesick,’ which focused on the opioid crisis.
Production Halted for Season 3
The casting announcement comes just days after it was revealed that ‘The Last of Us’ Season 3 is currently on a production hiatus. Filming for the third season began in British Columbia in March, but the production has taken a four-week break due to scheduling conflicts with the FIFA World Cup. Vancouver is hosting several matches in June, which have disrupted daily operations, including filming.
According to British Columbia’s production directory, filming is scheduled to resume on June 28 and is expected to wrap up in November. This pause allows the production team to manage the logistical challenges posed by the global event while ensuring the quality of the upcoming season remains high.
